BARBER APPRENTICESHIP FAQS

To many, cutting hair may seem like a simple job that anyone can do. The fact is, though, that barbers have a very special set of skills that they have acquired through attending barber school. Not only do barbers have to have steady arm and hand control, the ability to stand for long periods of time, and finger dexterity, but they also have to have good people skills when it comes to working with clients.

Are you passionate about becoming a barber? Barber apprenticeships can be a really useful way to learn the skills you need while getting paid to do it. Five Star Academy offers barber and cosmetology apprenticeships to help you develop your skills to the fullest. Read on for the answers to some of our most commonly asked questions about barber apprenticeship.

What is an Apprenticeship Program?

You may be wondering what an apprenticeship even is and why anyone would choose to enroll. Basically, an apprenticeship program is a formal, organized system of on-the-job training, supplemented with in-class instruction that allows students to “earn while they learn.” Depending on your state, you will be required to complete a certain number of hours of training in order to become a licensed barber. In California, the requirement includes 3,200 hours of training, plus another 200 hours of classroom instruction.

Does the Apprenticeship Pay?

Yes! The apprenticeship at Five Star Vision is known as an “earn while you learn,” which means that you will be getting paid for the work you do during the hands-on training portion of the apprenticeship. To learn more about our pay scales, contact our team at Five Star Academy.

Do Apprentices Get to Work on Clients?

After completing the 39-hour apprenticeship training, students will be issued an Apprenticeship License by the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, which then allows them to work hands-on with clients. Trainers will decide on an individual basis whether or not students are ready to move on to each service with clients.

How Does the Apprentice Actually Learn How to Perform Services?

At Five Star Academy, we use a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training to ensure that our apprentices are fully prepared for working with real clients. It is important that each apprentice is self-motivated and willing to put in the effort necessary to learn these skills. Using the time provided, as well as practicing these skills outside of the classroom, is necessary to get the most out of the education experience.
